What is a Senior Session? | Gilbert, Arizona Photographer

Have you ever been confused when someone says they shoot senior sessions? Are you envisioning cute ladies with gray hair? Although, I love that, they usually want photos with their families. 🙂 This is referring to high school seniors majority of the time, but can also be for people graduating college.

Why senior sessions? Well, graduating high school is one of the first big steps into becoming an adult, it’s a big deal! High school is a special and defining time for teens, so capturing their journey and personality is such an amazing experience.

I encourage my seniors to wear multiple outfits to show off their style, personality and what they’re into. These can be fancy, casual, sports jerseys, dance and even their future colleges. I’ve seen so much and I love it! Along with this, I encourage props to go along with these interests and outfits. I love to see their sports gear, musical instruments, books, skateboards, class rings, letterman jackets and more! I’ve had senior’s cars included as well and that’s always fun and interesting.

Now let’s not forget the cap and gown! Not all senior shoots incorporate this, but if it’s possible, I encourage it too! I tell people that if we do their shoot earlier than May (which is a good idea!) that they can borrow a cap and gown and buy a tassel online. That way, even is the shoot is earlier in the year, we can still get these amazing shots. I love to incorporate the tassel and wear the gown in multiple ways. There are so many fun shots I can do with these!

The location choice is another super fun part of these sessions! Usually the parents let their senior choose where they want the sessions. There are so many different looks! A popular one for seniors is the downtown look or a big scenic place. Superstition Mountain has been a favorite recently!

When to schedule? Most of the time, senior season starts at the beginning of the new year with March, April and May being the busiest time for them. However, I have had some early birds do it around November and December. I always suggest getting on my schedule as soon as possible!
